Some Favorite Harry Potter Moments

So, I had three great posts planned for this week. Did I do any of them? Nope. Because I’m both busy and lazy. Sorry! I guess I’ll do them next week? Maybe I will write them now while Oliver is busy watching Big Bugs Band.

But! It did leave me with a chance to do this impromptu post! I’m glad it did because I would’ve felt foolish if I’d passed up this opportunity to gush about Harry Potter.

Happy Birthday to Harry and Neville! Here’s to these two heroes!

Bookish Candles and the Power of Scent

Once upon a time, when I was President of the Honors Program to be exact, I was sitting during in a fascinating, Honors-exclusive lecture by a psychology professor on the psychology of scent. Apparently, scent is a more powerful factor than I had ever realized. It was during this lecture that I learned:

  • Aside from lifestyle factors, scent is the number one indicator of compatibility in romantic relationships.
  • If someone of the opposite sex smells bad to you, it may just be because your immune systems are too similar. Genetic diversity is a good thing so your body is saying, “Hey there! Don’t fornicate with this individual because you’ll probably produce immunity compromised babies!”
  • Birth control, however, negates this bodily function. So often times, when women go off birth control to get pregnant and are having fertility issues, their partner suddenly smells bad to them.
  • The amount of tips a stripper or pole dancer receives when she is ovulating usually goes up by 200% because of the pheromones she’s giving off and entering the noses of on lookers. On the flip side, they go down when she is menstruating. For the record, I don’t endorse this kind of behavior but I do find it to be an interesting statistic.

How to Throw a Budget-Friendly-Adult-Harry-Potter Party

Mummy and Ollie, Ollie the House Elf

As you might recall, a few weeks back I mentioned it was my birthday. I love to plan themed parties and I was itching to do it, so after my trip to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, I decided to throw together a Harry Potter party last minute. I usually have a little one each year on July 31st, but I wanted to go big since it was in celebration of my birthday and despite having a small time frame to pull things together, it was a great success and didn’t break the bank. Launching the Store!

And it’s now official! I feel that there are enough products to finally and formally promote the Of Books and Bailey shop, hosted via Etsy. There is a link all the way to the right in the menu bar, or you can simply click here. The designs are by me, and we are currently featuring products inspired by books, Harry Potter, Star Wars, Sherlock, and the Hunger Games. We’ll have more added later this month! Continue reading “Launching the Store!”

The Lasting Power of Harry Potter

IMG_1501I have the most exciting news to share! My trip to Universal’s The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Florida became official this week! It has been a dream of mine to visit, and I’m so glad to finally have this opportunity to live out some more of my childhood fantasies. In preparation, I bought this wonderful evil wizards t-shirt from The Colorful Geek. I invite you all to take a gander at their wonderful shop on Etsy. Psst…Guess Where I Am?

I won’t be posting today. Why? Because I’m at a con meeting the great Jason Isaacs, aka Captain Hook, aka Lucius Malfoy.

Stay tuned! I’ll tell you all about it on Monday!

An update on the shop: I’ve reached a slight hitch, which is normal for all start-ups right?! It’s no big deal. I’m just waiting for some paperwork to be approved. In the meantime, I will keep designing so that more fandoms and geekishness will be represented when everything is sorted out! If the paperwork just happens to not get approved, we have several other options. Fear not! There will be a store! And it will be awesome! I’ve already received some samples of my designs and they look amazing! Continue reading “Psst…Guess Where I Am?”

Homemade Butterbeer Recipe

IMG_0796

After our experience with the terrible butterbeer at the Yule Ball, we’ve been craving some of it’s deliciousness every since! After being badgered day after day to make some, I finally gave in this weekend and whipped up a batch from my super awesome recipe, which I’m about to share with you. V-Day: The Date that Got Nerdier than Originally Intended

Valentine’s Day gets a lot of flack. True, I hate the commercialization of it. And the ignorant, romantic teenage version of myself thought it was stupid. Why do we need a day to celebrate love? Shouldn’t we celebrate love all the time? Yes, teenage Bailey, we should. But now that I’m an adult with a child who takes a fair bit of our time and money, I’ve realized that Valentine’s Day is just a wonderful excuse to spend some money for gifts and have some quality time alone as a couple. Yule Ball and Yucky Butterbeer

This weekend, Taylor and I geeked out and went to the pinnacle event of any true Potterhead. That’s right. The Yule Ball.

IMG_0434I was ramped up for this all week. Especially in light of Alan Rickman’s recent passing away, it seemed like the perfect way to spend my weekend. We got our tickets last minute, so I hounded over Amazon, looking for clothing to match our appropriate, while self-chosen houses (in case you didn’t know, Slytherin is the best house, but we’ll talk about that another time).
