This book tag was started by the lovely Chloe, and I think it’s pretty nifty. It gives great insight into not only people’s taste in books, but also music. Music is my favorite thing in this world truly, and brings the written word to a whole new level. So I thought this was fun!

Charlie Brown – Coldplay

This song always reminds me of Peter Pan. The mood captures the whimsical and fun pats of the book. It talks about places “where the Lost Boys meet” and the line in the chorus, “We’ll run riot, we’ll be glowing in the dark” makes me think Peter and Wendy flying through Neverland, sprinkled with pixie dust, and having the jolliest time.

Ever the Same – Rob Thomas

Hmm…Give me a second…I have to go search my goodreads and see what catches my eye. Ah found one! I think Stargirl by Jerri Spinelli and this song are a good fit. It captures the friendship between Leo and Stargirl.

Car Crash – Matt Nathanson

This song actually reminds me of an obscure book I read when I was teenager. Not that the subject matter was obscure, but it’s not a well-known book at all. It’s called The Long Way Home by Barbara Cohen, and it deals with a teenager dealing with her mother’s breast cancer and being separated from her sister while she attends summer camp. She eventually befriends the kooky, elderly bus driver, whose friendship gets her through her struggles.

Numb – Linkin Park

This song reminds me Twilight purely because Stephanie Myers said she listened to a lot of Linkin Park while writing the series. Other than that, I see no correlation.

Into the Ocean – Blue October

This song reminds me of The Awakening by Kate Chopin. It’s one of my favorite books that I was ‘forced’ to read in English class. The song is fitting given that the book takes place next to the ocean, which is a huge metaphor in the book. Especially the ending when the main character decides to swim out to sea and never return to shore. The end of the song is very fitting when the singer repeats, “Into the ocean, end it all,” over and over.

Weapon by Matthew Good band

I love this song! And it reminds me of my dearest Katniss Everdeen! Particularly it reminds me of Mockingjay as she turned into the face of the rebellion by Heavensbee and President Coin. One of my favorite lines in the song says, “And you breathe in, and you breathe out, for it ain’t so weird how it makes you weapon.” I love that because it reminds me of Katniss, hiding in the closet during one of her psychiatric episodes, and how they are using her traumatic experiences to turn her into a weapon against the Capital.

Snow White Queen – Evanescence

I love this song because it’s haunting and creepy. For that reason, it reminds me of the relationship between Alina and the Darkling in the Grisha Trilogy, especially in Shadow and Bone. The Darkling’s possessiveness of Alina is particularly reflected in the lyrics of the chorus: you belong to me, my snow white queen.

Lover is Childlike – The Low Anthem

The soft, melancholy sound of this song reminds me of Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. The gentle lyrics also make me think of Tess’s childlike, innocence, and how her kindness and naivety are taken advantage of time and time again.

Now that I’m thinking about it, it reminds of Ophelia from Hamlet as well.

I Will Follow You Into the Dark – Death Cab for Cutie

Cliché but it reminds me of The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and Allie and Noah dying together after a lifelong romance.

Sometime Around Midnight – The Airborne Toxic Event

This song speaks Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights all the way. It’s about a man who sees his ex-girlfriend and how deeply it affects him. It reminds me of just how strongly Catherine is able to provoke him.

Say When – The Fray

Alright, so this isn’t a “real” book yet, but this song has inspired many of the novels and projects I’m working on. The main one is called Eyebright and is the story of vampire hunters.

Us – Regina Spektor

Some Kind of Happiness by Claire Legrand. This song reminds me of summer, and this book is a great summer read!

What If This Storm Ends – Snow Patrol

This song reminds me of the Mortal Instruements, particularly Jace and Clary’s relationship in the first three books. Particularly the line, “A perfect halo of gold hair and lightning.” This physically describes Jace, but Clary also acts as a guiding light to Jace throughout the series. I enjoyed the first three books immensely. I wish they had just ended there.

Elephant Gun – Beirut

The song reminds me Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy. The music itself has strong European influences of the German and Russian varieties. The lyrics are also sad and in contrast with the tone of the song. It reminds me of the the inner conflict of the characters, particularly Anna’s.

Crossfire – Brandon Flowers

This song reminds me of a particular book in a roundabout way. I would listen to this song all the time when I rode the bus when I was living in Lithuania. During that time, I also read The Most Beautiful Walk in the World by John Baxter, my favorite memoir to date. Thus the song and the book remind me one of my favorite times in my life and are invariably connected.
